Project details
The Giardino degli Osservanti is a peculiar example of urban redevelopment that has allowed to recover a large degraded area in the historic center of Lucca and to provide the city with a new green space. It develops above an underground car park for 530 cars and is surrounded by important historic buildings, including the convent complex of S. Francesco of the fifteenth century.
This roof garden, inspired by the traditions of the vegetable and historic gardens of Lucca, reinterprets in a contemporary key the typical geometries of Renaissance courtyards. The elevators, made of “Cor-ten” steel, are inspired by military sentry boxes. The Giardino degli Osservanti is one of the largest hanging gardens in Italy and offers a splendid panoramic view of the city of Lucca and its most representative monuments.
